EvenStart operates under the principle that "all children, regardless of circumstance, need to be supported by their community in order to grow up healthy, happy, and with every opportunity to meet their potential."

The Mandate

The EvenStart mission is to help children impacted by poverty or trauma, to mitigate this early life experience and give them an even start. Upon public school entry, they are thus positioned on an equal footing with peers.

The Foundation

In 1997, Ms. Boyce founded EvenStart to assist children ‘at risk’, in reaching their potential, and most importantly helping them to learn that each of them is valued. The program includes a wide variety of educational, therapeutic, transportation, and nutritional supports. These programs are accredited by the provincial government and acknowledged by peers and adjunct program providers in the community, for their notable strengths and children’s successes.

The Founder

Ilona Boyce, MSW, is the Founder and Executive Director of EvenStart for Children Foundation. Ms. Boyce is a recognized expert in the field of early childhood. In recognition of her work, she has been awarded the Children's Service Award by the Early Childhood Professional Association of Alberta and in 2007, received Global TV’s Woman of the Vision award.

The Partnership

Today the Charity of EvenStart for Children Foundation and the non-profit Heartland Agency and Educational Services work side-by-side to collaboratively provide needed programs for 'at-risk', traumatized, and economically-disadvantaged children. This partnership involves extensive program supports to children’s families, notably the annual Christmas Hamper campaign.
